Painting Leaves

We love to do crafts with Magnolia leaves.  Not only are they everywhere here in our Southern Landscape but they are also a hearty leaf that will stick around for years to come.

They other day I had a small class where we painted and gold leafed some leaves....  The result was simple, modern, and lovely.  

We have found that acrylic paint works best.  We also added touches of gold leaf and glitter to give them a little bit of sparkle.

Lacing Marigolds with Treehouse Kid & Craft

Just a handful of years ago, I ran an Organic CSA farm. We would plant Marigolds in between rows and beds to naturally deter harmful insects and disease.  Making Marigold necklaces always brings back memories of those lovely days on the farm.  

Marigolds have such a sweet aroma and they are long lasting so they work great for making necklaces, garlands, hair bands, and more.  This is one of those crafts that many ages can enjoy.  My daughter, Maypop made one for her favorite farm doll who she calls, Mama.  

INGREDIENTS

a couple of handfuls of Marigolds

a large blunt embroidery needle  

String

DIRECTIONS

-Lay your Marigolds out in your desired pattern

-Cut a piece of string or yarn long enough for your project

-Thread your Embroidery Needle

-Start lacing through the back of the flower.  

***It is good to be gentle with these, they are quite durable but they can fall apart if you are not careful.

If you have any leftover Marigolds (only organic ones) toss them into a salad, they are edible!

Earth Day Peace Flags!

At TREEHOUSE. kid and craft we have been celebrating Earth Day all month long.  We have painted with plants as our brushes, made seed bombs, needle felted, knit, made animals with wine corks,  and more.  One of my favorite projects that we did was on created by one of my instructors, Hope.  She came up with the sweetest Peace Flag project and the kids all loved it! 

We love finding a project that many age groups can enjoy.  We did this with our 1-3 year old Mama/Papa and me class and the babies loved placing their ingredients on the flags. 


Project:  Peace Flags made with found natural ingredients
ages:  1 and up! 
Materials needed:  found ingredients, glue, heavy weight paper or Card Stock,  yarn
Equipment needed:  hole punch, scissors

directions
1.  Cut out your flags.  Our flags were cut in 4 x 6 inch rectangles and then we added a little accent at the bottom.  Adults, you may need to help out with this step.
2.  Go outside and gather some lightweight natural ingredients.  We found flowers, seeds, grass, herbs, and branches.
3.  Spread glue on your flags.  We used Popsicle sticks so the wee ones could do it easily. 
4.  Start arranging your found ingredients.   
5.  Let your flags dry flat on a table for a few hours or until the yarn is dry.
6.  Punch 2 holes at the top of each flag, one on the right and the other on the left side.  We recommend punching 3/4 of and inch in from the edge of the flag. 
7.  Cut a piece of yarn and begin to lace the yarn through each flag.  Be gentle with the flags so your natural ingredients stay on the flag. 
8.  Hang in a window and enjoy!

When the ants get into the kitchen, it's always a big deal, and when the wee flowers bloom, it turns everything yellow. 

It just seems like it's always the little things that have the greatest effect, so in that tiny spring spirit, I set out to plant the smallest seeds in the smallest pots. 

Come summer time all of the baby sprouts will be giant veggies.
